Sir Quentin Blake is an English cartoonist, most prominently known for his groundbreaking paintings in Roald Dahl’s revolutionary novel Matilda. He also painted 17 other Road Dahl books.
Since the 1990s, Blake has had an additional career as exhibition curator, curating shows in the National Gallery, the British Library and the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris. Recently, he has begun to pursue his craft in hospitals and healthcare settings in the UK and France where his work can be seen in wards and public spaces. Also, he has completed a scheme for the whole of a new maternity hospital in Angers.
Greatly inspired by French cartoonist Honoré Daumier, Blake recalls that in his childhood, most children’s books were bland and vacuous, and that his love and passion for reading is what propels his magnificent drawings.
For his drawings of the book The BFG by Roald Dahl, the author would send him shoes that he thought the BFG should wear, and together they brought this character to life.
His drawings, especially the one for the notes book Matilda, became a symbol for children and adults alike, and have been printed on mugs, shirts, tote bags, and more. All literary fans immediately recognize his drawings and are automatically attracted to them and to the world that they portray. As Melanie McDonagh from The Daily Telegraph said about him: “He can tell wonderful stories without a single word, but his partnership with Roald Dahl was made in heaven…In conjunction with Blake, there was a kind of alchemy. I’ve never met a child who didn’t love Quentin Blake.”
At Dan Alexander & Co, we realize the power of cartoons and use the quality of cartoon design more than once in our work.
Looking at the branding we designed for “Park Bavli”, a real estate project, we used cartoons to depict the experience of living in the new and unique neighborhood situated the heart of Tel Aviv. In addition, Rituel, a French bakery that entered the Japanese market, used a whole cartoon-based language to accompany the branding.
